The K(lingon) M(usical) A(rtifacts) #3 have been cleaned and photographed enabling the start of a new phase in the research project to rediscover the musicological value of the pieces in question.

Head KTRE researcher, Floris Schönfeld, will be working together with Klingon language expert Marc Okrand to decipher the objects and try to place them with in Klingon culture.

This research is made possible by Stroom Den Haag

and facilitated by the Zeebelt Theater, Den Haag.

The schedule for the workshop:

Date/Time

What?

Where?

19 march

Next RECPLAY meeting. We go through some ideas that people have had for instruments. I will bring some of the prototype instruments I have so far. Bring examples and ideas if you have them!

Beeld/geluid room

KABK

24,25,26 march

17:00 till 21:00

Workshop in the Zeebelt theater. We will work these evenings on developing your instruments and your playing technique. Each evening we will try to end with a short improvised battle with whatever is available to get the rules clear and find the optimal strategic use for your instrument.

Zeebelt Theater

27 march

20:30

April/May

Performance of battle jam in the Zeebelt Theater. We will work towards a well orchestrated battle, but it is important that this jam is a RESEARCH project and that we try to learn as much as possible about  the agressive and defensive power of sound and develop a working system of combat.

Those who are interested can go on and follow the path of the warrior further with the Klingon Terran Research Ensemble. We will start rehearsing the Klingon opera ‘U’ from end of April onwards. The goal is to perform at the endexam and beyond at festivals and conventions in the coming year.

Instruments:
The idea is that we develop our own instruments to do battle with. The idea’s and  basic research for these instruments should be done before the start of the workshop if  possible to make the working period as productive as possible!
All instruments should be based on the generate/energize/fire principle that I explained briefly at the last meeting.
One part of the instrument should generate sound. It is preferable that the instrument be based on a simple analogue and physical way of generating.Think of hitting, blowing, plucking, pulling, pushing, throwing. Make it as big and violent as you want to!Remember the power of the action will contribute greatly the effect your instrument will have in battle and the sound will be energized by the next part of the instrument.
This part of the instrument should energize and channel the generated sound of the first part. Think of ways of strengthening the generated sound and tweeking, amplifying, building, fragmenting, simplifying ect. The obvious choice for this is digital equipment but try to think beyond software. Analogue amplification and interference is possible with different materials and shapes.      Also try to think how to physically connect with action of the first part of the instrument i.e. how do you continue the action done by the first player.
The final part of the instrument is the trigger or control mechanism. This part should be involved with the timing and direction of the sound generated and energized by the first two parts.Think of how you can control the created sound so far, how you can physically throw, fire, direct, slam it at your enemy. This should be a physical action that makes the intention of the warrior team clear in a battle situation!Think of control interfaces such as motion sensors or joysticks, or of conducting methods/voice control.
The idea is that we start to break off into groups after the next meeting. I understand that is quite complex to think of a complete generate/energize/fire principle alone so concentrate onone of the principles if you want to. It is possible to have more than one generating or energizing member per team that create different sounds, but try to keep the control/fire person as a clear ‘head’  of the instrument.  Facility list:
We have all the basic sound and image facilities of the Zeebelt that we can use, these include:
- a 4 speaker PA system with rigging possibilities and 12 channel mixer- Full theater light setup with rigging, filter and, dimming possibilities and light desk- various microphones with stands and cables
- I hope to use part of an installation piece of Daan Brinkman’s. This consists of a 32 speaker setup with a lot of directional possibilitiessee http://www.daanbrinkmann.nl/?p=37 for an idea of what is looks like.
Also we can use the RECplay equipment which I am sure you are familiar with.
There is a small production budget so material and transport cost should be covered. If you need to get expensive hardware look where you can rent it and we try to make a deal with the rental company. Also look at the possibilities of the uitleen at the KonCon and KABK.
Let me know on time what kind of material you need so we can arrange the transport ect.!!!Mail me at info@ktre.nl    So far so good…
For those of you who want to see the last performance by the KTRE look on http://www.youtube.com/user/KTResearchEnsemble
